Dr. Gangavarapu is a postdoctoral scholar working on statistical phylogenetics in the Suchard group at University of California, Los Angeles. He is broadly interested in developing software to better understand the evolution of infectious pathogens. He is particuarly interested in using specialized hardware such as graphics processing units to accelerate inference in statistical phylogenetics. Additionally, he applies phylogenetics to study the transmission dynamics of infectious pathogens, particularly during outbreaks and has previously conducted research on viral pathogens such as Zika, Ebola, West Nile, and SARS-CoV-2. He has also developed software to process viral amplicon-based sequencing data and web-based applications to conduct genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 on a global scale. He obtained his PhD at Scripps Research under the guidance of Dr. Kristian Andersen and Dr. Andrew Su, and remains a close collaborator of the Andersen lab.
