AMP Advocacy: Celebrating the Past and Looking Towards the Future

The Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) has a rich history of advocacy for our patients and our profession.  A defining moment in AMP’s advocacy history was the 2013 unanimous Supreme Court decision, AMP v. Myriad, which recognized DNA as a product of nature that could not be patented.  As AMP celebrates the 10-year anniversary of this landmark case, we continue to advocate for the ability of our members to practice medicine through Precision Medicine. The AMP Professional Relations Committee (PRC) plays a large role in the Association’s advocacy initiatives and was instrumental to the success of the AMP v. Myriad decision.  PRC members diligently advocate for appropriate regulation of laboratory diagnostics and other issues to ensure the practice of Molecular Pathology is protected.  The PRC continually engages with lawmakers, federal agencies, coalitions, patient organizations and other professional societies to inform and influence policies and regulations that have significant impacts on the practice of molecular diagnostics. The work of the PRC is ongoing, and during this session AMP leadership will highlight our past successes and share our ongoing work, including the status of the AMP v. Myriad decision, VALID Act advocacy, supporting CLIA Modernization, and enhancing patient advocacy engagement. This session is an opportunity for attendees to celebrate AMP’s past achievements, and engage with the PRC to learn about current advocacy activities, and how you can be involved in our efforts!
