Our translational research activities focus on community-based oncology and pathology practice. We utilize next-generation sequencing (NGS) and a variety of other molecular methods, such as fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH), to study the molecular features of solid tumors and hematopathological cancers from a patient population in a predominantly rural region of the United States. We compare patient molecular profiles and clinical outcomes to those reported from patients in more urban areas by larger academic centers, in order to address the urban-rural disparities in oncology. Our current projects are focused on the associations between somatic variants and the biological pathways involved in carcinogenesis and their relationship to patient outcomes.
